How to Repair a Dead Car Key
Sometimes extreme heat or cold can cause a car key to stop working properly. Take a moment before replacing it.
When your car keys break, it's a real hassle. It always happens at the worst possible timing! There are several ways to repair a broken car key that won't require the purchase of a new key.
Dead Key Fob Battery
Modern key fobs allow us to unlock doors, trunks and tailgates without the need for a car key. Some key fobs have a built in key that can be used to start our vehicles. However, these devices are dependent on a small battery that powers their remote functions. If this battery dies and the key fob stops working, it will not be able to send a signal to trigger the vehicle. There are a variety of ways to repair a dead car key fob.
The first step is to find out if your key fob is dead. If it seems to be dead, you will need to replace the batteries. You can do this yourself by removing the key fob from its clip or using a small flat head screwdriver to break it. remote key repair should not use too much force or it could cause damage to the fob. It's also important to make sure you're replacing the correct type of battery. The majority of key fobs utilize three-volt CR2032 batteries, however certain models might require something different. Broken Key Ring
The internal chip in the key fob is what transmits to your car's immobilizer in order to start the motor. If this chip becomes damaged or there are programming errors, the key fob will not be able send the correct identification code, and your car won't start. In some instances a malfunctioning transponder key may also be caused by physical damage or wear and tear on the key shell or contact pads.
You will often see warning indicators on your dashboard when a keyfob has trouble communicating with the immobilizer system of your vehicle. These include warnings about errors, flashing lights or the key not locking the vehicle. If you are noticing any of these warnings, call your local locksmith immediately to repair your key fob or replacement.

Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keyfobs has broken off the little key ring loop at the top where it attaches to the keyfob. It's made of plastic or metal that is soft. I've drilled a hole, and wet-sanded it to make it stronger, but I suspect the problem isn't helped by this.
I've also attempted to wrap the broken part of ring with clear tape but it didn't work as good. It's a shame because I use the ring to hold my keys in place on the little mini-split ring that holds the larger split ring for the other keyfobs.
If the case for the key fob itself is broken, it's often possible to remove the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't already dead). There are kits online to help, but they usually only offer a temporary fix - it might be better to bring it to a professional who will replace the battery and reprogram the key fob. Alternately, you may be able to find an alternative case at the home improvement store or locksmith. These cases aren't as expensive as the new key fob.
